DAY 1
Monday 17th August, 2020
Granada
Our journey will begin at Granada, once known as “Granada of the Jews,” due to being the site of Shmuel HaNagid’s Yeshiva. Granada is most known for its famous Moorish Palace, the Alhambra, and a great wonder of the world. During our tour we will visit Granada’s established Albaicin neighbourhood and its old town. We will then arrive in our chosen hotel for a fabulous and spectacular welcome dinner.

DAY 2
Tuesday 18th August, 2020
Gibraltar
Today we will visit the British Colony of Gibraltar. Known as “The Rock,” Gibraltar is home to a thriving Jewish community as well as the only apes on Mainland Europe. Gibraltar may only be 2.3 square miles in size but it has an incredible and fascinating history. We will take a trip up the rock to meet the apes and take in the stunning views, enjoy a visit to the Synagogues and meet local Jewish representatives. In the afternoon we will arrive at Ronda, where the white-painted villages are on every hilltop, the gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo, a stone bridge spanning the gorge, has a lookout offering views. New town’s Plaza de Toros, a legendary 18th-century bullring, is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

DAY 3
Wednesday 19th August, 2020
Tangiers, Morocco
In this day we will reach the Northern coast of Africa and magical Morocco. Our ferry will whisk us through the straits of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, before reaching the port of Tangiers. A panoramic tour will give us an overview of the vibrant and bustling city, followed by a walking tour of the Kasbah and Medina, which will evoke centuries of history. The discovery of the only remaining old synagogue will follow. Our local experts will tell us stories of the history of the Jews in Tangiers.

DAY 4
Thursday 20th August, 2020
Seville and Cordoba
After breakfast we have the day to discover the wonderful city of Seville, situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. Seville was originally founded as a Roman city and is now home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The tour will include the mystical Barrio de Santa Cruz area – the former Jewish Quarter. After lunch the tour will continue in the famous city of Maimonides, Cordoba. The famous city was once the biggest in all of Europe and is still rich in Jewish Heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage site, with its magnificent monuments and treasured Jewish quarter, was for many hundreds of years a place where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together in relative peace. In the evening we will embark in an authentic Spanish Flamenco show.

DAY 5
Friday 21th August, 2020
Portugal, Evora and Lisbon
After breakfast we make our way to Portugal and our first stop will be EVORA, which is the capital of Portugal’s south-central Alentejo region. In the city’s historic centre stands the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also called the Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround the Cathedral of Évora, a massive Gothic structure that begun to be built in the 12th century. We will learn about the latest discovery of the Jews and the city. In the afternoon we will arrive in our hotel in Lisbon, where our Shabbat preparation will embark.

DAY 6 – SHABBAT

Lisbon
After the Shabbat services and Kiddush, we will take a walking tour to the many important sites, allowing us to understand and experience the history of the Jews in this region. Lisbon is home to a synagogue originally founded by a Gibraltarian Jew.

DAY 7
Sunday 23th August, 2020
Sintra, Obidos and Tomar
Sintra near the capital OF Lisbon, a long-time royal sanctuary is placed. Its forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and palaces. The tour will then continue in Obidos, one of the most picturesque towns of Portugal. The compact town centre is filled with cobbled streets and traditional painted houses, while the entire town is encircled by the solid city walls. There is no better example of a traditional Portuguese town than Obidos. Our last visit of the day will be in the ancient Synagogue of Tomar. Its Synagogue appears to have been built in the 15th century, sometime between 1430 and 1460, when the local Jewish community acquired some prominence. The synagogue was situated in the middle of the Judearia (Jewish quarter), on what was later known as “Rua nova que foi judaria” (“the New street that was the Jewish quarter”).

DAY 8
Monday 24th August, 2020
Coimbra
Most of the day will be spent in Coimbra where we will visit a recent discovered Mikve. Coimbra has an ancient University and we will visit its stunning baroque library with over 250,000 volumes. In the afternoon we will embark on a tour to Conimbriga, which is one of the largest Roman settlements excavated in Portugal, and was classified as a National Monument in 1910. Following our dinner we will enjoy a traditional Fado show.

DAY 9
Tuesday 25th August, 2020
Trancoso and Belmonte
Trancoso- A city which still preserves the walls and doors of the medieval castle. Jews from Aragon and Castile established themselves here in the 14th century. We will have the honour of meeting with Senor Jose Levy Domingez, who is a Jewish Journalist. His family have lived in the area for hundreds of years and he will share with us his first hand experience of the local culture, history and the families who have lived here. The tour will continue to the famous town of Belmonte, which was home to many hidden Jews who secretly preserved their faith in spite of the Inquisition in 1496 and their society has survived to the present day. A visit to the Synagogue will follow, including an introduction by one of the senior Jews of the community.

DAY 10
Wednesday 26th August, 2020
Porto
Rich in Jewish Heritage and famous for giving the world the sweet sherry called “Port”. Jews were at the centre of the development of Porto from the middle ages. We will visit the famous Kadoorie Synagogue in Porto where the story of the Jews will be told. We will be able to enjoy views of the Duro and explore the beautiful city of Porto. This will continue with some time to do some last minute shopping before we make our way to our Gala dinner.
