DAY 1
MONDAY 24TH JUNE
MEETING AT ORLY, PARIS AIRPORT 9AM TO START OUR JOURNEY
Overnight: 5 ★ Château La Chenevière, Normandy
After a quintessential French Breakfast complete with delicious croissants, we will make our way to Normandy (east) to stop for a brief visit to the home of Claude Monet at Giverny. The house contains artefacts from his studio and a collection of Japanese prints.
We will then embark on a journey to ROUEN, the former capital of Normandy, and the capital of the department of Sein-maritime in the North of France. The presence of Jews in Rouen goes back to at least the early 11th century.
During the 12th century the Jews of Rouen were placed under the authority of a local bailiff rather than the expected commissioner of the Jews of Normandy, who may have been Peter of Cluny mentioned as the “Jewish King of Rouen.” The Jewish quarter, named Rue as Gyeus, became the modern Rue Des Juifs. One of the houses at the beginning of the street is said to have served as a synagogue, with another house as the school.
For the rest of our day we’ll visit the Museum and some cultural monuments in the area, and have lunch before making our way to our retreat for the week, the stunning Château La Chenevière.
